Ferret Tips

So, you are thinking about entering the wonderful world of owning a ferret!
There are some important things to keep in mind before you buy your ferret, and other, more important things to keep in mind before you bring them home.

Things to consider before you decide to buy a ferret

How much time can you dedicate to your ferret?
Ferrets are social animals, and should be let out of there cage often.

Are you getting one ferret, or two?
For most people, I know that ferrets will not get as much people time as they would like. As with any other animal, it seems to work well if they have a playmate for when you are not around.

Picking out a cage.
There are several "ferret cages" on the market, that are one or two levels, and are not very large. These cages are great if your ferret will only be in them at night, but if your ferret can only come out during select hours, I recommend buying a large multi level cage.

Do you have other pets?
We have cats who play well with our ferrets and love them. Our dogs, however, are to rough. We would not trust our dogs, unattended, for a second around our ferrets, although they do play with the cats. Always ensure you have a place your other animals will enjoy being while your ferrets are out.

Where are your ferrets going to run around?
I tend to let my ferrets run around my office, and at times, run around the entire house. We do, however, close doors to certain rooms. It is imperative that any room the ferrets are allowed to be in is properly ferret proofed.

Ferrets require some patience, which leads to further preparation.
When we purchased our first ferrets, we were irritated that if we let them out, every trash can would be tipped over, shiny objects would be hidden, and any stack of paper would be confetti. However, we learned quickly that certain things could be picked up in a minutes notice, and we could let the ferrets out without these concerns. It's all about ferret proofing your ferret's area. Now, they play in what is left out for them, and it's a blast for them, and a blast for us to watch.
